A warm welcome awaits you at Salzwelten Salzburg

For centuries, the salt on which Salzburg's rulers based their wealth was mined in Salzburg's Dürrnberg. Today, an adventurous journey through the history of that "white gold" awaits you at Salzwelten: from the beginnings of the Celtic miners through the Dark Ages to modern mining. The fast-paced wooden slides and the winde-ranging tunnels, which you explore led by an experienced guide, provide an added dash of action. The raft trip across the mystical underground salt lake takes you into the dazzling world of baroque Salzburg. And along the way, you will cross the only subterranean international border between Austria and Germany.

Let´s go underground

Just like real miners, visitors to Salzwelten Salzburg take the mine train into the interior of the mountain. Thus begins a roughly 90-minute journey back in time, from modern salt mining to the days of the Ancient Celts.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you will learn all sorts of interesting facts about the significance and history of the white gold to which the country and the city not only owe their name, but also their wealth, as you make your way through the former mining tunnels. A history lesson with a very special fun factor.

On the trail of craftsmanship

Replacing the old "Solestube", a modern salt manufactory was built atop Celtic Mountain. Here you can experience first hand how high-quality, hand-scooped BAD ISCHLER gourmet salt is produced from Dürrnberg's natural brine. The master saltmaker provides live insights into his daily work.

SALINA Celtic Village

SALINA is an authentic replica of a Celtic village, giving you a vivid impression of how the Celts lived 2500 years ago. In close cooperation with Museum of the Celts Hallein, the small settlement on the Dürrnberg was designed according to the latest scientific findings and made accessible to the public. Here, life in times long past becomes tangible. The SALINA Celtic village, the new salt manufactory and a themed playground can also be explored playfully with the help of the Salzwelten APP incl. virtual adventure games and AR features.
