A warm welcome awaits you at DomQuartier Salzburg

For centuries, the Residenz palace and Cathedral represented the heart of the prince-archbishops' power. Salzburg was ruled from here, and courtly life was celebrated here. But with the end of the prince-archbishops' power, the structural unity of the prince-archbishops' domain also disintegrated. With the founding of the DomQuartier, the prince-archbishops' center of power was made accessible to visitors for the first time. The result is a unique museum tour through the baroque heart of Salzburg.

State Rooms & Residenz Gallery

The Residenz served the prince-archbishops as their official residence and as a place of representation. The splendidly furnished state rooms reflect over 200 years of rule, art and style, from the Renaissance to the Baroque and Classicism. The Residenz Gallery displays exquisite European paintings in eleven halls: Dutch, Italian, French and Austrian masterpieces from the 16th to 19th centuries.

North Oratory and Organ Loft

Special exhibitions of the DomQuartier are held in the North Oratory of the cathedral. The last room, a chapel dedicated to St. Rupert of Salzburg, is particularly worth seeing because of its rich artistic decorations. From the Organ Loft, the interior of the cathedral is revealed in all its splendor.

Cathedral Museum, Chamber of Art and Curiosities

The museum in the Cathedral's South Oratory displays precious liturgical objects from the Cathedral Treasury as well as Gothic and Baroque paintings and sculptures from churches and monasteries across Salzburg province. The oldest and most important piece is the Rupertus Cross, created between 700 and 750 AD.

The prince-archbishops' Chamber of Art and Curiosities, reconstructed in 1974, is one of the few in Europe whose historical furnishings are still largely intact. The original showcases from the 17th century hold a wealth of astonishing objects and curiosities from art, nature and technology.

St. Peter´s Museum

In the Wallistrakt, a wing made accessible to the general public only recently, selected masterpieces from the extremely rich collections of the venerable Archabbey of St. Peter are on display. As in most monastic museums, the medieval church treasures form the basis of the Saint Peter's collections. The religious way of life of a monastery and the celebration of the sacred liturgy require certain utensils and textiles, which were kept in the sacristy and later in the treasury because of their value far exceeding material worth.

Original Musical Venues

The DomQuartier is also home to locations in the staterooms and the Cathedral area that are of extraordinary significance in the history of music. As court musician to the prince archbishops, W.A. Mozart, among others, performed his court duties here, wrote music for these rooms and also performed here himself. In the DomQuartier, you can get closer to his work than almost anywhere else in Salzburg!
