The Lungau Holiday Region SALZBURG'S SUNNY SOUTH

Salzburger Lungau HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PLACE OF ENCOUNTER. HERE, IN EARLIER TIMES, YOU WOULD MEET ITINERANT MERCHANTS AND OTHER TRAVELERS MAKING THEIR WAY ACROSS THE ALPS. TODAY, SALZBURG's SUNNIEST HOLIDAY REGION IS AN INSIDER TIP FOR EVERYONE IN SEARCH OF BEAUTIFul NATURE AND A TRUE ESCAPE FROM THE DAILY ROUTINE.

KISSED BY THE SUN

Lungau lies between the high peaks of the Salzburger Pongau and the province of Carinthia. Due to its location, this high plateau has also been blessed with extraordinary weather, boasting more sunshine than anywhere else in Salzburg province. Though even on clouds days, there is no shortage of things to discover here either. From the virgin landscapes inside the protected UNESCO Biosphere Park, to some truly extraordinary excursion destinations.

Mauterndorf CASTLE: EXPERIENCE THE MIDDLE AGES IN PERSON

The absolute focal point of a journey to Lungau has to be a visit to Mauterndorf Castle. A former toll station, for centuries it was a gathering place for merchants who had to pay the tolls they owed before continuing on their expedition through the Alps. Today, this beautiful castle allows you to embark on a different journey, a journey through time itself. Be that at the exhibition in the tower or during a stroll along the Panorama Path in the castle park, which even features a real, fully functional drawbridge.  Mauterndorf Castle hosts various marvelous events throughout the year (a Christmas market, Easter market ...) and the playground is an absolute highlight for the kids. One insider tip is the castle tavern, with its delightful sunny terrace. And there we have come full circle: since sunshine is a kind of secret trademark of the Lungau region.

The Lungau in Numbers

The drawbridge on the Panorama Path at Mauterndorf Castle is 26 meters long.

In 2012, Lungau, together with the Nockberge region of Carinthia, was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Mauterndorf Castle was first chronicled in the year 1253.

Some 20,000 people live in Lungau, the smallest region in Salzburg province.

Mauterndorf Castle

There is so much to discover on your way through Mauterndorf Castle: including the medieval weapons collection in the rocky cellars. As well as, of course, the personal chambers of prince-archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, whose family crest can still be seen at many points inside the castle.
