A warm welcome Awaiting you at Mauterndorf Castle
Merchants, vagabonds, archbishops and nobles: Mauterndorf Castle has seen many travelers in its long history. They all had to open their baggage here on their way across the Alps and pay the road tolls. Today, the castle delights visitors young and old with numerous medieval highlights, a large knight's playground and a 700-year-old fortified tower. The latest: a natural walking loop through the revitalized castle park, including a real drawbridge.
Of life in the Middle Ages
During the tour of the castle, re-enacted scenes from the colorful goings-on at the castle invite visitors to travel back in time to the Middle Ages. One of the highlights of the tour through the castle is a walk through the fortified tower with its entrance at a height of twelve meters. On six floors, the original use of the tower is recreated with dungeons, armory, emergency quarters and turret rooms.
Tour with a picture-postcard view
The recent construction of an attractive pathway on the site of the old castle park now makes it possible for visitors to experience the castle hill with its varied flora, the Taurach river flowing past and the small waterfall of the Stampflbach stream. Along the way, you are constantly treated to fantastic views of the castle and the surrounding nature of the Salzburg Lungau region. The highlight of the beautiful walk is undoubtedly the fully functional drawbridge.
Who will conquer the castle?
A real highlight for little knights is the castle playground: There, the youngsters conquer a real "castle within a castle", because the playground is integrated into the medieval walls and courtyards of the castle itself. In the meantime, older visitors can make themselves comfortable on the large sun terrace of the castle tavern. From there you have a magnificent view over the surrounding landscapes of Salzburger Lungau.
