Salzburg's regions FROM THE FESTIVAL CITY OF SALZBURG TO AUSTRIA'S HIGHEST PEAKS
NO OTHER PROVINCE IS as diverse as salzburgER LAND with its five regions, EACH havING retained ITS very special character to this day.
Inner mountains and outer mountains
While the Flachgau and the city of Salzburg are characterized by the lakes and gentle mountain landscapes of the alpine foothills, the mighty peaks and rugged cliffs of the Alps dominate in the Pinzgau and Pongau. In the Tennengau, with its old salt-mining town of Hallein, the history of mining and the salt trade, which made the prince-archbishops extraordinarily rich and enabled them to develop their residential town into a Baroque gem based on Italian models, can still be felt today. That said, the city of Salzburg is justifiably nicknamed "the Rome of the North". As a counterpoint to this, the Lungau, the southernmost region, has retained its very special charm. Here you can almost feel the Mediterranean air, and the sun south of the Tauern mountains shines longer and more often than it does practically anywhere else in Austria.
One thing is certain: If you want to experience Salzburg in all its facets, you have to see IT all.
