The Tennengau Holiday Region THE WORLD OF THE CELTS

BETWEEN SALZBURG "CITY OF MOZART" AND THE HOHE TAUERN RANGE IN PINZGAU AND PONGAU, YOU WILL DISCOVER THE TENNENGAU REGION: IT WAS HERE THAT THE ANCIENT CELTS ONCE LIVED, UNEARTHING A TREASURE DEEP INSIDE THE MOUNTAIN THAT HAS SHAPED SALZBURG TO THIS VERY DAY.

... after all, there's good reason why our city and province both contain the word "Salz" in their names, which is the German for "salt". Even the Celts, back in their day, knew that an immense treasure was deposited in the depths of the Dürrnberg and began mining it. Later, it was the Salzburg prince-archbishops who had this "white gold" extracted from the mountain, refining it in the salt city of Hallein, then transporting it by river to sell it at destinations around the world.

HISTORY OF WHITE GOLD

That said, you can experience first-hand the history of Salzburg throughout the Tennengau region: most impressively, in the tunnels and galleries of Salzwelten Salzburg, which is today's name of the salt mine on the Dürrnberg which has been remodeled in order to offer visitors a veritable museum adventure. Right next to the mine, the operators have built a faithful replica of a Celtic village, where you are given an authentic picture of what life was like for our ancient ancestors. Meanwhile, the historic city of Hallein is well worth a visit as well. For centuries, it was here that the wealth was generated that you can marvel at today in the city of Salzburg with its magnificent Baroque buildings. There are, in fact, many different activities to be enjoyed in Hallein: How about a visit to the Museum of the Celts or the Silent Night Museum, or perhaps simply munch on a delicious ice cream in the medieval town center.

HOLIDAYS IN Tennenau: Pole position FOR CULTURE AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

Thanks to its outstanding location between the city of Salzburg and the inner mountain regions, Tennengau is an ideal base for all kinds of holiday experiences: from a day filled with culture in the city of Mozart to a tour of the mountains. And whenever it is expected to turn rainy, the Salzwelten salt mine and the region's spa resorts (Bad Vigaun, Aqua Salza) are a perfect alternative.
