A warm welcome This awaits you in the DomQuartier Salzburg
For centuries, the residence and cathedral formed the center of prince-archbishop power. Salzburg was ruled from here, and courtly life was celebrated here. But with the end of the prince-archbishop's power, the structural unity of the prince-archbishop's "palace" also disintegrated. With the founding of the DomQuartier, the prince-archbishop's center of power was made accessible to visitors for the first time. The result is a unique museum tour through the baroque heart of Salzburg.
State Rooms & Residenzgalerie
The residence served the prince archbishops as their official residence and as a place of representation. The splendidly furnished state rooms reflect over 200 years of history of rulership, art and style, from the Renaissance to the Baroque and Classicism. The Residenzgalerie displays exquisite European paintings in eleven halls: Dutch, Italian, French and Austrian masterpieces from the 16th to 19th centuries.
Cathedral arcade terrace
The Cathedral arcade terrace offers an incomparable view of the Cathedral Square and Residence Square, as well as the famous panorama of Salzburg's Old Town with its town houses, churches, city hills and the Salzburg Glockenspiel. In addition, the impressive baroque facade of the cathedral is within reach. A unique experience and the perfect place for a souvenir photo to your vacation in Salzburg.
North Oratory and Organ Loft
Special exhibitions of the DomQuartier are held in the North Oratory of the cathedral. The last room, a chapel dedicated to St. Rupert of Salzburg, is particularly worth seeing because of its rich artistic decoration. From the Organ Loft, the interior of the cathedral is revealed in all its splendor.
Cathedral Museum, Chamber of Art and Curiosities
The museum in the cathedral's Sudoratorium displays precious liturgical equipment from the cathedral treasury as well as Gothic and Baroque paintings and sculptures from churches and monasteries in Salzburg. The oldest and most important piece is the Rupertus Cross, created between 700 and 750 AD.
The prince-archbishop's chamber of art and curiosities, reconstructed in 1974, is one of the few in Europe whose historical furnishings are still largely intact. The original showcases from the 17th century hold a wealth of astonishing objects and curiosities from art, nature and technology.
St. Peter´s Museum
In the structurally newly developed Wallistrakt, selected masterpieces from the extremely rich collections of the venerable Archabbey of St. Peter are on display. As in most monastic museums, the medieval church treasures form the basis of the Saint Peter's collections. The religious way of life of a monastery and the celebration of the sacred liturgy require certain utensils and textiles, which were kept in the sacristy and later in the treasury because of their not only material value.
Original Musical Venues
The DomQuartier has valuable musical venues in the staterooms and the cathedral area. As court musician to the prince archbishops, W.A. Mozart, among others, performed his court duties here, wrote for these rooms and also played music here himself. In the DomQuartier, you can get closer to his work than almost anywhere else in Salzburg!
