At the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the final destination and high point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the anniversary experience “Summit Meeting of Their Majesties” explores a special chapter of Austrian history. It was here that Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth reached the foot of the Grossglockner 170 years ago.
The exhibition forms part of an easy 1.4-kilometre circular trail leading from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe up to the Kaiserstein and back again. At several stations along the route, historical illustrations, reports and modern installations recount the journey of the young imperial couple from Schönbrunn to the high alpine world of the Hohe Tauern. The focus is on their visit on 6 and 7 September 1856, the travel conditions of the time, and the political, social and personal background of imperial journeys.
The experience also includes “Dining Like an Emperor”, offering insights into Emperor Franz Joseph’s culinary preferences and dining culture at the Viennese court. The “Kaiserblick” and “Sisi” anniversary dirndl dresses by the Salzburger Heimatwerk add a special cultural accent. Designed by traditional costume designer Toni Golser, they combine skilled craftsmanship, historical references and the regions of Salzburg and Carinthia.
Together, the exhibitions, panorama trail and cultural elements create a varied experience combining history, nature and the high alpine landscape of the Grossglockner.
