DOMQUARTIER SALZBURG
Since 2014, the DomQuartier has made it possible to gain new insights into the Baroque splendor of the Salzburg archbishops. The tour leads through the Residenz palace, the Salzburg Cathedral and the museum part of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter. Church- and art history are impressively presented here. Visitors pass through 15 state rooms of the Residenz and can take a look at opulent ceiling stucco work and valuable interiors. The Museum of St. Peter, the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world, houses a collection of around 40,000 exhibits, a small part of which is on display. Other interesting areas of the DomQuartier are the Residenz gallery, the Cathedral Archway Terrace and the Cathedral museum.
The landmark of Salzburg is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe and is still so well preserved, because no besiegers ever managed to conquer the fortress. Construction began more than 900 years ago. The Archbishop of Salzburg made it the seat of government during his reign (1495-1519). After a fire in 1851, almost everything was restored and subsequently the fortress served as a barracks. The fortress funicular has been around since 1900. Today, Hohensalzburg Fortress is an excursion destination worth seeing. The Fortress Museum provides insight into the history of its construction and life in the castle, while the Rainer Regimental Museum exhibits peace and wartime memorabilia. The absolute highlights are the famous State Rooms and the Magic Theater, in which visitors embark on a journey back in time to the Middle Ages.
The Salzburg Open Air Museum is located in the Untersberg Nature Park near the city of Salzburg. On a total of 50 hectares, rural construction, domestic and working life of the province of Salzburg are presented and preserved. The historical focus is on the 16th to the 20th century. More than 100 original buildings have been reconstructed here: Farms, craft houses, mills, barns, a blacksmith and a sawmill can be experienced first hand. The area is subdivided into the five regions of the province of Salzburg and events on topics such as customs and crafts complete the offer at the Salzburg Open Air Museum. A great destination at the foot of the legendary Untersberg mountain!
