SALZBURG CITY
HOHENSALZBURG FORTRESS
Hohensalzburg Fortress is not only very old – about 1,000 years old, in fact – but also one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. Which means, there’s a lot to explore. Luckily, the master key is always part of the birthday celebration – and with it, the youngsters can unlock all kinds of hidden corners and secret rooms. Three themes are available to choose from: On the Legends and Myths tour, children listen to old tales which they also get to act out in costumes. Just as exciting: Sports and Games in the Middle Ages, where they learn how children in centuries past spent their free time – and try out some of the games for themselves. Yet another fun highlight is the Treasure Hunt, ending with each child crafting their own special treasure to take home with them. Birthday parties at the fortress are suitable for ages 6 and up.

DomQuartier Salzburg
Why not celebrate a birthday where the prince-archbishops and their court once resided? In the splendid state rooms of the DomQuartier, the birthday child and guests enjoy a colorful variety of fun experiences. Tailored to different ages, several themes are available: Children ages 6 and up can dash through the state rooms in search of a piece of cheese as part of the Hurry, Little Mouse tour. Alternatively, it’s off to a Grand Banquet, where the children dress up as dukes and countesses. Let the journey back to the past begin! Children ages 8 and older don their painting smocks: first comes the exhibition, where original paintings are carefully scrutinized. Then, our paint detectives continue by experimenting in the art lab. Children 9 and up are able to put their talent as budding directors to the test: in the animation workshop, where they create their own animated films. And because, after all that excitement, tummies are certain to begin rumbling, snacks and drinks are ready waiting in the prettily decorated art lab. You can bring your own cake along or order one as part of the tour for an additional charge.

Hellbrunn Palace & Trick Fountains
From the very outset, Hellbrunn Palace was designed as a pleasure palace – built for celebrations and the entertainment of the prince-archbishops. With its trick fountains, palace park, and the palace itself, this is an ideal setting for an unforgettable children’s birthday party. One practical advantage: the birthday program is tailored not only to the child’s age but also to the weather. Children enjoy a fun, age-appropriate guided tour of the palace and, on hot summer days, a refreshing splash-filled adventure amid those trick fountains. For six- to seven-year-olds, The Festival of Animals is a perfect choice, with Marko the Lion leading the group through the palace exhibition and giving the kids tricky tasks to complete. For eight- to twelve-year-olds, the Treasure Hunt is jam-packed with challenges for our curious young detectives. Food and refreshments afterwards need to be organized individually. In warm, sunny weather, a picnic in the palace park is a great choice. The trick fountains are open from late March through early November.

SALZBURG OPEN-AIR MUSEUM
When the guides at the Open-Air Museum reach into their big toy chest, all sorts of unusual objects appear: blocks of wood, ropes, and the like. The birthday kids and their guests quickly discover that these can make for wonderful games – just like in the olden days before we had video consoles and Playmobil. Before that, there’s a short tour with visits to several historic houses. The group even gets to go into rooms that are normally kept locked, where they learn what and how people ate back then, what a parlor looked like, and what school life was like. As an alternative to the play program, the children may wish to try their hand at silversmithing: under the guidance of a master goldsmith, each child forges their own silver ring. Irrespective of the program you choose, a snack (either picnic-style or at the Salettl inn) and a ride on the museum train are definitely a must – though these need to be arranged separately. The programs are suitable for children ages 6 and up. The birthday child and one accompanying adult receive free admission.

SALZWELTEN SALZBURG & CELTIC MOUNTAIN
An outing up to the Dürrnberg is an excellent choice for a birthday celebration. Slip into a miner’s outfit and set off on a thrilling ride into the tunnels. The mixture of historical insights into salt mining and a real sense of adventure makes a tour of Salzwelten an unforgettable experience. For an extra shot of adrenaline, the wooden slides carry you even deeper into the mountain. Things turn a little mellower when the boat casts off and carries the group across the shimmering underground salt lake. For birthdays, the group can either join the regular tour or the special children’s tour with Sally the Mine Duck. Afterwards, the cake will be right there waiting in the specially decorated party room. The birthday child also receives a small gift. And for those kids who still have energy to spare, Celtic Mountain is there to be explored, providing hands-on insights into the lives of the ancient Celts. Or, why not pay a visit to the Salt Manufactory to discover how table salt is actually produced.

In earlier times, Mauterndorf Castle served both as a toll station and as a summer residence for the prince-archbishops; today it is a true adventure castle for children. Not only the knights’ playground, but also the exhibitions promise plenty of entertainment – while at the same time giving valuable insights into life at the castle as it was in centuries past. Nothing stands in the way of a real medieval-style birthday party: knightly armor, princesses’ dresses, and jester costumes will be waiting in the dressing room. A visit to the living quarters of Prince-Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach is almost as exciting as the games that follow. Whether medieval games, dancing, or the tournament – the time simply flies by. And before you know it, it’s back to the present day. Now it’s time for a snack or a birthday cake (please bring your own). In conclusion, the birthday child will receive a small gift and a souvenir photo.
Info & Bookings* Ages: 6 to 12 Duration: 2.5 hours (including time for snacks/cake) Cost: €100.00 (up to 10 children)

Hohenwerfen Castle
Secret passageways, splendid princely chambers, a bell tower, and countless hidden nooks and crannies – a birthday party at Hohenwerfen Castle is perfect for adventurous kids. After the children’s tour, the birthday child and guests can either experience a small knights’ tournament or set off on their own puzzle rally. The program also includes a visit to the birds-of-prey show. Child supervision is not provided, meaning that adult chaperones must be present at all times. Whenever tummies begin to grumble, a stop at the castle tavern will definitely do the trick – advance reservations are recommended.
